What Is Endodontic Retreatment?

Improper healing can result from:

  • Canals that are curved or narrow and were not addressed during the initial treatment.
  • Complex canals that were not identified during the initial treatment.
  • The crown or restoration was not placed in a timely manner after the procedure.
  • The crown or restoration did not effectively seal out saliva, leading to contamination inside the tooth.

Sometimes, new issues can impact a tooth that has been previously treated.

  • If new decay occurs, it can expose the root canal filling material, leading to infection.
  • A cracked or loose filling or crown can also expose the tooth to potential infection.

When retreatment is chosen as the solution, the tooth will be reopened to remove the existing root canal filling material. The canals will be cleaned, examined, filled, and sealed, with a temporary filling placed. It is important to schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist promptly to have a new crown or restoration placed on the tooth for full functionality.
